This is a short, pleasant and interesting read about the British campaign in Northern Iraq during the First World War. It was written shortly after that war, and so its style not pc. That said, it is a valuable book about a little known campaign, and especially interesting as the author served with a unit equipped with Rolls Royce armored cars. Many of the place names will be familiar with readers following the news from Iraq since 2003, and all should find this little book useful for background and/or as encouragement for finding out more about the Mesopotamian Campaign.The book concludes with a couple of chapters about Kermit Roosevelt's experience as a battery commander in France towards the end of WWI and afterwards in the occupation of the Rhineland. These are also interesting, not so much as battle history, but as a description of life in a combat unit of the AEF.
The book appears to be an excerpt from a longer memoir. It would have been good to know how the author came to serve as an officer in the British Army and why and how in Iraq.

I can't believe that this book written by the president's ( Theodore) son in the 1920's is so readable and so relevant today.
Kermit Roosevelt was the second son of President Theodore Roosevelt. His was a life of priveledge, but with a very Teddy Roosevelt twist. Before the period he recounts in War in the Garden of edan , Kermnit had been exploring with his father along the River. This trip nearly killed them both, and certainly contributed to the early death of his father. From this trip Kirmit would write his more famous book Through the Brazilian Wilderness. Branches of the would be named for both Kermit and his father.
War in the Garden of Eden is a memoir of Kermit's service in World War I, mostly as a British officer in a motorized light machine gun unit in the Middle East. The last part of the book relates some of his experience as an American Army artillery officer in Europe.
Kermit took his risks as a soldier, even if he was assigned to lead the unit's transport/supply section out of concern for his safety. Mostly his view of desert warfare was that of a serving junior officer with no special access to decision making. Kermit had superior language skills. He would quickly become so skilled in Arabic that his unit would have additional assignments for him based on his ability to talk with the locals including local officials.
The old British Army could be somewhat clubby, but it is clear that Kermit had contacts and prior introductions that got him into the tents and households of people where a less connected American would have had little access.
There is value in this short book. The reader will get some sense of World War I service in a theater rarely discussed. The problem is that the does not say that much. Facts are rather dryly reported. He has much to say about some of the same cities and areas that modern Americans know from the recent American actions in the Middle East. The reader will get glimpses into Army life, the give and take of battle but no real depth or connection to events or places.
A merit to this book is that it is short. The events related needed more depth and insight, but Kermit Roosevelt was not prepared to share more insight, nor does he seem capable of the depth. I rate this as a good book because there the fundamental story is interesting and out of respect to a good soldier, serving in a difficult theater. There is something traditional about his tendency to underplay events. His style seems appropriate to style of his era.
An interesting and insightful memoir by one of Theodore Roosevelt's son. All four son's served in World War I. One, a pilot, was killed in combat. Two were wounded, one seriously. Kermit served with the British Army in the Middle East (modern day Iraq) against the Turks before joining the American Army in France as an artillery officer. He ended the war on occupation duty in Germany.
This book interested me because it was set during World War I in Mesopotamia, now known as Iraq. Having served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom I was interested in comparing World War I era experiences with my own. Kermit Roosevelt, the author, a son of President Theodore Roosevelt, visited many of the places (Baghdad, Hila, Karbala, Ramadi) that I had the opportunity to visit. By the author's descriptions much remains the same, particularly in remote areas, while urban areas have seen considerable change. The market areas, in particular, of cities and villages with merchants hawking their wares and the teeming masses of people have changed very little. The book is concise; Roosevelt gets a lot of mileage out of a thin volume. He wastes no words as he succinctly relates his experiences in Mesopotamia as an officer with the British Army and concludes his account as an officer with the US Army on occupation duty in Germany at the end of World War I. This book is very well written by an author in whose name was established in 1947 by the US Army Command and General Staff College the Kermit Roosevelt Exchange Lecture Series which involves an annual exchange of American and British lecturers. This book should be of interest to anyone who is interested in military history or the background to some of the recent history of the Middle East.
This was an interesting look into WWI from the point of view of a soldier. Teddy Roosevelt's son kept a great record of his adventures through the middle east, France and Germany as he fought in WWI. His writing style is very matter of fact, and his descriptions of the surroundings are sometimes very clear and other times very vague. It really reads more like a personal journal than a war story, and he leaves out a great deal about the fighting itself. He tends to sum it up very matter of factly by stating how bad the fighting was on a particular day and nothing else. He goes into great detail about the people he meets (including Colonel Lawrence of Lawrence of Arabia fame, for example) It's not terribly well written but it's certainly not boring. It's very interesting, and a great buy for anyone who wonders what it was like to be on the ground during the Great War.
